Neo is a shortcut for the slider, that is, instead of pushing the slider away from the target side, let the player ball go directly onto the horizontal wooden stick, and then return to the surface on the other side. That is, the ball can go around the slider, instead of having to push it from below.

Wooden neo

The wooden neo is the most common type of neo. After going onto the stick, the player pushes the three vertical bars several times until there is room for the ball to run and return to the other side of the road without being blocked by obstacles. Its difficulty is moderate, and ordinary people can master it with a little practice; but it is also possible to pass without pushing at all, and the difficulty is quite high.

On any slider with equal heights on both sides of the road, wooden balls can be used to perform neos in the same way, which is very common.

Paper neo

Paper balls can also neo. Although the paper ball is lighter, but because it cannot push the slider, it is easy to fall in the process of returning from the wooden stick to the road, so it is much more difficult than the wooden neo.

In Speedrunning, the common ones are the 8-2 Paper Gheto-Neo, 9-2 Double Paper Neo and 11-4 Double Paper Neo, etc. The first one requires paper ball to gheto the stone transformer first, and the latter two require consecutive success of two paper neos. These three shortcuts are extremely difficult.

Stone pseudo-neo

The stone ball is too heavy and has a high inertia, so it is nearly impossible to perform a "stone neo" in the same way as wooden balls and paper balls (though it is possible with a higher ball speed).

However, the stone pseudo-neo can be accomplished at original speed. A stone pseudo-neo is where the stone ball falls on the wooden stick and pushes the entire slider out of its effective working range, causing the slider to go through the mold and fall.

Since it is difficult for the stone ball to jump onto the wooden stick stably, and this "shortcut" can instead waste time, it rarely occurs. Though, it may appear in custom maps, for example in Hevel_10, where a stone pseudo-neo is the intended route of passage.
