Dome is a decorative object in Ballance, with the common characteristics of objects.

However, domes are not mobile like other objects, and in default levels, if the dome is placed near a checkpoint, the dome will be added into both two sectors, which results in the false scene of the dome "not disappearing after completing the sector", causing many to misrecognize dome as a type of floors in the past.

Characteristics

The shape of dome is the part with smaller volume when an ellipsoid with two equal axes is cut through a side perpendicular to the third axis.

Its surface is mainly blue, with some cloud-like patterns on it. It has high light reflectivity and gold luster, with shadows underneath.

In default levels, the dome has no practical effect on the gameplay of the level: neither helping the player to pass the level nor appearing as an obstacle. Even if it is placed on the only way to pass, the surrounding will be spacious for players to bypass.

In earlier custom levels, domes are used as floors, and because of its high elasticity, it is widely used in the elastic ball level 天马行空. But nowadays, this kind of use is not encouraged as it impacts the overall appearance of the level. Thus it does not have much use in custom levels so far.

The most common purpose of the use of dome is to place extra point or extra life on the top to make it hard for players to get the reward using stone ball.

Physical Parameters

Domes have quite glossy surface. Wooden balls and paper balls can go up to the top of the dome with a little distance of approach, but stone balls need much longer distance of approach to have a higher instantaneous speed when bumping at the dome in order to reach the top of it.

Its detailed parameters are below:

Object Diameter of bottom surface/m Height/m Coefficient of friction Stiffness coefficient Mass/t Linear damping Rotational damping
Dome 13.287 3.5527 0.2 0.8 0.2 0.1 0.1

Did You Know

  • In most default levels, including Menulevel, throughout the whole level, there is only one dome, which usually appears at large platforms where there are many ways to go. However, there are three domes in Level_10: two in the first section and one in the fifth section.
  • A dull sound is produced when a wooden ball hits a dome, and the sound will be sharper and crisper if a stone ball hits the dome instead. This is also how the Chinese nickname of dome 'Big Ben' is formed. But if a paper ball hits a dome, the sound will be the same as if the paper ball lands on the floor.
  • We can see that dome has its mass in its setup, but it is meaningless as the dome is completely unmovable.
  • Domes have higher elasticity than floors. Hence it is used to increase the speed or the height of rebound of the ball in speedrun in 'elastic mode'.
